Homemade Tortillas

I finished making my tortillas today. Smelling the dough cooking on the griddle reminds so much of my grandparents and my mom's cooking. It's a shame that some traditions die when certain members of the family pass. I guess it's up to the remaining members to carry them on. I'm trying so hard not to lose those memories and special traditions and I think cooking helps keep them fresh. They are not perfectly round but they taste just as good. The lovely embroidery on the tea towel is my mother's work. A not so new frontier.....

So....let's do something different. Well, not different for the internet but different for me.

Let me start by saying that I'm not the greatest cook in the world. I can cook, but I really only have a few things that I cook really well. The above picture is one of them. I can make a mean pot of beans.

Put them in a bowl, sprinkle on shredded cheddar or that white Mexican crumbly cheese and scoop them up with your favorite store bought tortilla. (Or if you have time and the courage you can make your own). I did actually try making my own flour tortillas and I have to say they came out pretty good.

So....then this morning I was in the shower letting my mind wander and it hit me. Why not blog about my experiences in the kitchen? I've had some real disasters, but I've also had some things come out really good. I think it would be good for me to do because one....cooking always seemed so intimidating to me. I'm better about it now, but it made me tired just thinking about putting a whole meal together. (This is coming from a person who loves cooking shows and cookbooks and magazines....the idea of actually doing it, Yikes!)

I guess the second reason is that it will help me work at feeling more confident about it. Attack it head on and enjoy the outcomes. Bad, good, hilarious or just plain disastrous. Who cares? I'm in the kitchen, getting my apron dirty.

I also like to write so I guess having a blog is a good place to do that. Along with cooking I'll mix in a little of my craftiness. I knit and crochet and I want to learn to sew. I just finished a scarf and I'm still working on my crochet project. My blanket that I've been working on for years is big enough to cover my legs now, but nowhere near finished. My Boston Terrier would tell me different if she could talk. She seems to think its hers to lay on when I'm in bed working on it. Pictures of those projects will come later.

I'd also like to occasionally share my mountain biking adventures. I have not been on a bike in quite a while and if I don't get back to it soon I will lose my credibility as a single speeder. That is what the SS stands for on my Blog name. Bean (reference to my heritage, a proud Latina) which I feel is not at all offensive, to me anyway. SS for single speeder. I ride a single speed mountain bike, not always fun for my aging muscles or my knees but it's a fun bike. And scene...well, that's self-explanatory.
